Thermohaline circulation changes: a question of risk assessment

چکیده

This May, Bjørn Lomborg’s “Environmental Assessment Institute” published a report [Olsen and Buch, 2004] on the risk of ocean circulation changes in the Atlantic, to coincide with the release of Roland Emmerich’s Hollywood blockbuster The Day after Tomorrow (a film based on a shut-down of the North Atlantic Current). Given its lack of expertise on ocean circulation and climate, the Environmental Assessment Institute commissioned two scientists from the Danish Meteorological Institute to produce the report. Nevertheless, the report is published and the copyright owned by Lomborg’s institute. Admittedly, the somewhat unusual process of gestation and launch for a scientific document made us approach it with some caution.

Thermohaline Ocean Circulation

The thermohaline circulation is that part of the ocean circulation which is driven by fluxes of heat and freshwater across the sea surface and subsequent interior mixing of heat and salt. The term thus refers to a driving mechanism. Important features of the thermohaline circulation are deep water formation, spreading of deep waters partly through deep boundary currents, upwelling and near-surf...

Shutting Down the Thermohaline Circulation

Past climatic changes were caused by a slowdown of the thermohaline circulation. We use results from experiments with three climate models to show that the expected cooling due to a slowdown of the thermohaline circulation is less in magnitude than the expected warming due to increasing greenhouse gas concentrations. The integrated assessment model FUND and a meta-analysis of climate impacts ar...

Global Warming and a Potential Tipping Point in the Atlantic Thermohaline Circulation: The Role of Risk Aversion

Common integrated assessment models produce the counterintuitive result that higher risk aversion does not lead to stronger near-term abatement. This paper re-examines this result with a DICE model that is fully coupled with a thermohaline circulation model. It also features Epstein-Zin utility and uncertainty about climate sensitivity that resolves after some time. The simulations show that av...

Possible Economic Impacts of a Shutdown of the Thermohaline Circulation: an Application of FUND Working Paper FNU-42

Climate change can lead to a substantial reduction of the strength of the thermohaline circulation in the world oceans. This is often thought to have severe consequences particularly on the North Atlantic region and Northern and Western Europe. The integrated assessment model FUND is used to estimate the extent of these impacts. The results indicate that, owing to a slower warming (rather than ...
